Day 125

Day 125:

People can change very quickly, and very slowly. Not just in terms of changing their minds and opinions, but changes to their personality, and how they perceive themselves. Sudden and spontaneous changes can arise due to life events, even things that seem small. As children, we often experience the thing that we end up spending our adult lives doing. At the time, it can be one afternoon's activity, and not seem very important to anybody who isn't ourselves. Yet in that moment, whether consciously or not, we have become aware of something that we can find absolutely fascinating.

Over the course of years, smaller changes to our lives amount to major changes in our personalities. As they happen so slowly, we often don't notice them, until somebody points them out to us. How we react to these changes can be really interesting too. If we discover a change that we don't really like, those moments of realisation can be crushing. However, if it's a positive thing, we may not think about it for more than a few seconds. We are always more drawn to the negative than the positive; it is evolutionary nature to be more concerned with threats and what we don't have over things that are OK.

The response to realising the change is often far more telling than the change itself. If we don't like a change, to really do something about reversing it, and persisting with it, is to work towards your ideal self. To do that constantly is very difficult indeed, but large problems are not fixable overnight. Sometimes, solving a few of your smaller problems will help the bigger ones much easier to solve.

It's a couple of days before New Year, the time when we all resolve to make changes and try new things. Do you know what your resolutions will be?
