Day 53
Day 53:
Sound is something that we often overlook in our everyday lives. That's probably because it is so constant, that we are never removed from it. Almost everything in the world makes a sound, even the tiniest things. Wind, creaking floorboards, the hum of a phone. These sounds can be so quiet (or loud, in some cases), yet they are so important to notice.
The fact that we can hear all of these sounds is truly incredible, especially the fact that we do so constantly, even in our sleep. A sudden noise can wake you up in the night, draw your attention to danger, bring joy, surprise you, and so, so much more. It is no wonder, therefore, that the majority of people I know are very interested in music. I am incredibly fortunate to come from a musical family, yet I believe that I have failed to appreciate the importance and beauty of music until very recently. When these sounds are combined in a rhythmic and creative way, something unique and awesome is created. Humanity has created music for as long as events have been recorded, and it is through this vessel of sound that people have told countless stories, expressed themselves, and brought people together.
Sound permeates every part of our lives, it is always with us. I believe that we really should look after our ears, I try to keep my volume on things down, but I know that they are often too high. The idea of going deaf really does terrify me, since it would be to lose a sense we have never disconnected from. It is a complete unknown. I hope that science can progress to the point where deafness can be adequately treated. To be able to hear all of these sounds truly is a great gift; whether you use it to listen to the morning birdsong, have a conversation with someone, or listen to 'The Mine Song, but every time Stingy says 'Mine' the bass is boosted by 5db', please make sure that you take a moment to reflect on this amazing ability.
(P.s All of those three options are completely and equally valid ways to use hearing :)
