Day 62

Day 62:

A dimly lit garage, walls decorated with tools, boxes and shelves full of materials and random things. This is the arena in which truly great things become a reality. A shed at the bottom of the garden, single-glazed windows specked with frost, wooden floor buried under a thin layer of dirt. These are the true outposts of human creativity. A basement, an old barn; anywhere that you can keep your equipment and your focused mind.

It was not long ago that all great things came out of these seemingly insignificant, even dull and dilapidated places. Each family would have one, and it would always be used for repairing broken furniture or toys, or making new ones. But some went beyond that, taking the supplies from their humble environment and creating something new, that had never been thought of or deployed before. They would be painstakingly crafted with bare hands; failed attempt after failed attempt piling up in the corner, or outside. Until one day, the creator's vision was fulfilled, and brought forth unto the world, changing it forever. Essential things that we take for granted today, all emerging from a shed, on a rainy autumn day.

These days, most new inventions are created on a computer, in highly sophisticated programs. Tinkering has become button presses, the whir of the hand drill has become the hum of the CPU fan. But the spirit of these structures lives on. They are the home of creativity, freedom, and endless possibilities. Many have computers in them, a small part of their brilliant tool shelf.

Find your creative space, wherever it may be. I would use my shed, but it's currently full of boxes. Maybe I should build a second...
